What can I expect from psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a collaborative process between you and your therapist. The process can vary based on you, your particular situation and the therapist you work with. Our approach to psychotherapy includes: 1)Helping clients increase their awareness and understanding of issues related to their problems or concerns; 2) Exploring options with clients that will help them improve their lives; and 3) Empowering clients to make lasting improvements by building upon their strengths and by learning and implementing helpful strategies. Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your situation and needs. We will also discuss goals you want to work towards. We will offer you some information so you have an idea of what to expect if you want to continue psychotherapy with us. Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. The risks may include experiencing uncomfortable feelings when discussing aspects of your life. The benefits can include better relationships, solutions to specific problems, increased life satisfaction, improved physical health, and significant reductions in feelings of distress.
How do I choose a therapist?
It is important for you to select a therapist you are comfortable working with. Because you will be discussing important aspects of your life, you should develop a sense of safety and trust with your therapist. While it may be difficult to determine this before you meet with a therapist, it may help if you talk to the therapist by phone and ask any questions you have before deciding to schedule an initial appointment. Such questions can include professional experiences, approaches to therapy or other questions that may be important to you.
Is psychotherapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the privacy of all communication between a client and a psychologist. We can only release information about your treatment to others if you sign a written authorization form. However, there are some situations in which your authorization is not required for us to release information. Please see the Confidentiality section of our Psychotherapy Agreement for details of these situations.
